Hi, and welcome back to Everyday English with Teacher Alyse! I’m so happy you’re here. Today, we’re going to talk about a small but powerful change you can make in your daily conversations—replacing the word sorry with thank you. Many English learners, and even native speakers, use "sorry" too often. While saying sorry is important when you truly make a mistake, overusing it can make you seem less confident and even unnecessary in some situations. Instead, shifting to thank you can make your communication more positive and empowering. Let’s go through some common situations where you might be tempted to say "sorry" and how to rephrase them in a more confident and appreciative way. Instead of saying: “I’m sorry I’m late.” ➝ Say: “Thank you for waiting for me.” → Why? This shift acknowledges the other person’s patience rather than focusing on your mistake. It creates a more positive tone. Why Is It Important to Limit "Sorry"? Using "sorry" too often can make you seem less confident and even weaken your message. It can also make an issue seem bigger than it actually is. Of course, when you truly make a mistake, a sincere apology is important. But by replacing unnecessary "sorrys" with "thank yous," you turn negative situations into positive interactions. Full transcript available upon request. Follow me for more Everyday English.

English for praising somebody for their hard work. I am sure we all would like to hear a nice word or two for trying our best and putting effort into our work, which might boost our motivation and help us feel valued and encouraged. Being a teacher myself, I always praise my students and help them progress further and stay motivated every step we take together. So today, I would like to share some phrases that can be used for praising, I do hope you'll find them useful: ✅ Basic Praise: Good job! Well done! That's great! Nice work! You did it! I'm proud of you. Keep it up! Excellent! ✅ Slightly More Expressive: You're getting better and better! That’s a big improvement! You’ve worked really hard! I can see your progress. You’re doing a great job! You understood that perfectly. ✅ Encouraging and Specific: That’s a smart way to solve the problem. You used the new vocabulary really well. You’re putting a lot of effort into this. Your speaking has improved a lot. Great concentration today! ✅ Confident and Detailed Feedback: You handled that challenging task very well. You’re developing a really strong grammar base. Your pronunciation has become much clearer. I’m impressed by your commitment. That was a very well-structured answer. ✅ Nuanced and Motivational: Your consistent effort is clearly paying off. You’ve shown impressive depth in your responses. That was a highly accurate and fluent performance. You’re approaching near-native fluency in that area. The way you expressed your opinion was very mature and thoughtful.
